"Being able to add more value to that created by our clients, whether by challenging assumptions, questioning strategic directions, adding rigour to a process or securing a funding path to enable a growth opportunity, that is what drives me. "
How did you come to focus on the technology space?
I was fortunate to have moved from high end business strategy consulting with The Boston Consulting Group into working with early stage companies at the start of the Internet era. I co-founded a venture capital corporate advisory firm which had an innovative model. We worked intensively with our client companies, often taking COO or CFO roles to help drive the business forward and ensure its growth trajectory matched the needs of investors. We worked with a range of companies in primarily the media and internet spaces. Inevitably this meant technology was to the fore, which for me was a happy circumstance as I had always been fascinated by developments in all sorts of technologies.
What sort of client relationships do you seek to establish?
I think the key to this question in in the word relationship. Business relationships prosper in the same way that personal relationships do. They require trust, understanding, discretion and commitment. We are not transaction managers. There are plenty of advisors whose objective is to conclude a sale and move quickly to the next client. Our goal is to understand our clients, be forthright in our views but respectful of what has been achieved and spend the time to ensure that our clients are in the best possible situation to optimise the outcome from a transaction.
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
Everyone brings a particular expertise to what they do. What we do at Nextec is something which has often not been part of our clients' experience. Being able to add more value to that created by our clients, whether by challenging assumptions, questioning strategic directions, adding rigour to a process or securing a funding path to enable a growth opportunity, that is what drives me.
How would you describe the culture at Nextec?
We are in the business of understanding how best to assist our clients to optimise the value they have created in their businesses. To do that more effectively we need to be abreast of trends in the industries we serve, familiar with the opportunities to help take those businesses further and capable of delivering a strong, tightly managed process. In a team environment we are all working towards the same goal. That all requires collaboration amongst our team and it is that collegial culture which appealed to me about Nextec.
Outside of your professional role what activities do you enjoy engaging in?
Spending so much time in an office environment I am always keen to get away and enjoy life outdoors. While my mountaineering days are behind me now I still enjoy trekking, camping and in particular sailing. Family life also provides a wide range of other distractions, particularly in the areas of fashion and musical theatre, where my daughters are active.
